Our coffee offerings are predominantly Fair Trade, Organic, and Rainforest Alliance Certified™. As we continue to increase our standards for quality and justice within the coffee industry, we are grateful to the following organizations for the work that they do. At the heart of our philosophy is a desire to treat the environment and global economy with the utmost respect, and in so doing we strive to bring you a wildly delicious cup.
Our coffee is certified Fair Trade by Trans Fair USA. Fair trade certification ensures farmers receive a fair price for their product, in addition to fostering sound environmental and business practices.
TransFair USA, a non-profit organization, is the only independent, third-party certifier of Fair Trade products in the U.S. and one of 20 members of Fairtrade Labeling Organizations International (FLO). TransFair’s rigorous audit system, which tracks products from farm to finished product, verifies industry compliance with Fair Trade criteria. TransFair allows U.S. companies to display the Fair Trade Certified label on products that meet strict Fair Trade standards.
Our coffee is certified by Bay State Organic Certifiers. Organic production ensures that no chemical pesticides, herbicides or fungicides are used during any stage of production, resulting in a healthier environment and a better product for you.
Rainforest Alliance Certified
A few of our coffees are certifed by The Rainforest Alliance. The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit conservation organization that works to conserve biodiversity and promote the rights and welfare of workers, their families and communities. Farms that meet comprehensive standards for sustainability earn the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal. These standards conserve biodiversity, ensure that soils, waterways and wildlife habitat is protected and that farm workers enjoy decent housing, access to medical care and schools for their children. Farms must commit to a process of continuous improvement and are audited each year in order to maintain their certification. By shopping for products bearing the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal, consumers can support a healthy environment and help to improve the quality of life for farm families. Additionally, many of our coffees are shade grown. Shade grown coffee is grown under a canopy of partial to fully shaded forest canopy. The coffee tree is intended to grow in a shady environment as part of its natural ecosystem; maintaining this natural balance ensures a healthy habitat for animals, including many endangered migratory bird species. The amount of shade depends on many things, including the type of forest (tree species), age of the forest (tree height/density) and the decisions of the specific coffee farmer who manages the land. Coffee grown in shaded farms has exquisite flavor due to nutrient rich environment. Choosing one of our shade-grown coffees such as Sulawesi Toraja or Guatemalan Huehuetenango means you are playing a part in the protection of biodiversity around the globe.
